... So, you already have all the information about vehicle’s orientation somewhere on the panel or on the monitor next to you and you don’t want duplicated information? And the navigation monitor is here, just turn your head. So, keep turning your head looking for values and figures while others have all information needed for piloting in the form of overlay on the live ROV video! You don’t need the ROV Head-Up Display Captain Nemo application in this case.
Or you do?...
Head-up display (HUD) is not a new idea. But whether much ROV HUD you saw? There are some actually. All are realized in their own way.
This website describes yet another application that brings the ROV HUD functional. In the describing software product is an attempt to gather needed for piloting the ROV information and put it on a video, received from one of the cameras installed on the ROV.
The entire volume of data visualization is taken from the navigation mainframe onboard, in view of completeness and availability of the list of data needed. Video comes into the program through video capture hardware. These are the only two interfaces which are necessary for the application to work.
So what the data is required for describing ROV HUD? These are:
- The system data: date, time, the name of the project (operation)
- The orientation data: ROV position coordinates, heading, pitch, roll, depth,
altitude over seabed, speed
- The target designation data: a distance and bearing to point targets,
the heading of the active section of the Runline and the ROV offset of it.
What we shall be having after all mentioned data processed? All of just listed in the form of textual and graphic overlay plus program’s status information.
It is not news if to say that visual information is perceived and assimilated much more quickly and efficiently. For this reason the highest attention given to orientation and target designation parameters visualization. To create the overlay that brings more sensation to the ROV pilot on the vehicle state in the space and relatively to objects and the condition of ROV was and is the high-priority task.
So, here it is…
